Program Notes/Performance Instructions

Timetable is intended to be performed by two artists.

The score for Timetable is arranged in a 23×4 grid, making a total of 92 “blocks.” Within each block is an image or color or pattern that the performer must interpret for a predetermined amount of time. The piece was designed to be read with one performer starting at the top left-hand corner and progressing through the blocks as if reading a book until they reach the bottom right-hand block, and the second performer doing the inverse: starting at the bottom right and ascending to the top left. However, this isn’t a hard rule, and it can be read in any formation, with however many blocks desired, and it would still be considered a legitimate performance of the work.

In fact, the only hard rule of Timetable is that every block must be equally constrained. Each block must be precisely the same number of seconds, and no instrumental changes or peripheral additions are to be introduced once the piece has begun. Some ideas will develop splendidly into wonderful sonic phenomena, and others will flounder or be cut off by the time limitation. Some will sink, and others will swim.
